Cali makers you need to know!
We love finding great design, and when we can find it locally ... so much the better! California is super rich in talent, which makes it really fun finding great emerging designers and brands.
Our new fave local brand is Toit Volant. We just can't get enough of their super cool aesthetic. Alnea, the designer, taught fashion design around the world for 15 years. During that time, she found herself alarmed by the negative ecological impact of the fashion industry and the unethical treatment of craftspeople. When she started her own brand, Toit Volant, she decided to change all that by creating her own manufacturing studio from scratch. That's how Nana Atelier was born in downtown LA . Her goal is to normalize fair and just treatment of other human beings within this field. Toit Volant's style is oversized and minimal with fabulous unique materials. The craftsmanship of each piece is just amazing. We want every single thing we order from them for ourselves!
Los Angeles brand, The Odells, embodies California cool at its best. California style is effortlessly chic and comfortable. When Laura Stang and Jason O’Dell met in 2001, Laura had just started hand-dying and embroidering t-shirts to sell at the Brentwood boutique she was managing. Little did they know this “side-project” was just the beginning of a popular lifestyle brand, and since then, they’ve been refining a style that’s versatile and unique. Their prints are fabulous.
What's not to love about this badass, emerging California jewelry brand Watersandstone? Designer, Amy Morrell gets inspiration from organic objects that she has collected over the years living on the west coast. Each piece is handcrafted by Amy in her Oakland, CA design studio.
Speaking of badass jewelry, Godfrey and Rose, out of Venice, CA has an inspiring rockin' aesthetic, combining icons of punk and counter-culture with fine, high-end design and craftsmanship. We love pieces that bring together opposing energies. Badass elegance...yes please.
Next up is Anchors'n'Asteroids. This LA mother/daughter design team is absolutely delightful! Inspired by her family's deep love of art and music, Pearl, the Creative Director (who recently turned 11 years old) hand-draws their iconic portrait T's. She has an innate ability to capture the spirit of some of our favorite artists. The T's are printed on the softest sustainable organic cotton.
Simply the best candles we've found are from San Francisco maker Sherry Lee. Her brand Esselle's scents are amazing (we can't keep them in stock) and they come in perfect minimal, matte ceramic vessels that can be reused afterwards for storage, or as a planter or vase. The beautiful aesthetic of the candles is matched by their incredible scents.
Speaking of brands that invent amazing scents, Los Angeles' Orris Perfumery has absolutely blown us away with their desert inspired Saguara line. We have many dedicated customers who come to the shop specifically to buy this perfume line. Personally speaking, many perfumes give me an immediate headache, but not these. Orris perfumes are made with essential oils. The Saguara line is saturated with delicate desert florals and native herbs. These handmade artisanal scents capture the ancient spirit of the harsh yet harmonious landscape of the California desert. Orris Perfumery also hold workshops to help you design your own personal scent!
